Onyx Phone vs Google Voice for business

Google Voice is the phone many small businesses start with. For a team it is an add-on to Google Workspace, so you pay for Workspace and then for Voice on top. Onyx Phone is a business phone on its own: no other subscription, a number included for each user, and unlimited calling and texting on every plan.

What a team of five pays each month

Five people on Onyx Phone Starter cost $85 a month, billed monthly, with a number included for each person. Google Voice Starter is $50 a month, billed monthly for the same five people.

Google's prices are per user for Voice alone. Google says a team needs a Google Workspace plan, billed separately, to turn Voice on for more than one person, so the real cost per person is the Workspace plan plus the Voice plan. If you already pay for Workspace, Voice Starter is hard to beat on price. If you don't, Onyx Phone is one bill.

Where Google Voice is stronger

  • If your team already lives in Gmail, Calendar, and Meet, Voice sits inside the tools you have.
  • Voice Starter is $10 per user a month on top of a Workspace plan you may already pay for.
  • Google Voice calls many countries at published per-minute rates. Onyx Phone's unlimited calling covers the US and Canada.

Questions

Do I need Google Workspace to use Google Voice for business?

For a team, yes. Google says Workspace is required to turn on Voice for several users, and it's billed separately from Voice. Onyx Phone needs no other subscription.

Can I keep my Google Voice number?

Yes. Google Voice lets you port a number out. The Google Voice guide covers personal accounts and the Workspace guide covers business accounts.

Is Onyx Phone more expensive than Google Voice?

Voice Starter alone is cheaper per user. Add the Workspace plan a team needs, and Onyx Phone Starter at $17 per user is often the lower total, with texting included and a number for each user.
