Features / Shared business number

One business number, shared by everyone who answers it

Put one number on the truck, the website, and your Google listing, and let it ring the people who can take the call. Onyx Phone gives the line one call history, one voicemail inbox, and one text thread per customer, so whoever picks up next knows what happened last.

How a shared number works

A line in Onyx Phone is a business phone number with a team. An account admin assigns teammates to the line, and every one of them can answer its calls, read its texts, and call or text out from it. A customer always sees the business number, never anyone's personal cell.

When a call comes in, everything ticked for the line rings at once: the browser, the iPhone and Android apps, and desk phones. The first person to answer takes the call, and the others stop ringing. If the caller hangs up first, every device stops.

One history for the whole team

Every call on the line lands in one list, incoming, outgoing, and missed, with who answered, how long it lasted, and any notes. Voicemails sit in the same list with a written transcript, and anyone on the line can mark one returned so two people don't call the same customer back.

Texts work the same way: one conversation per customer, shared by everyone on the line, next to the calls. New calls, voicemails, and texts show up live, without reloading the page.

Who sees what

Teammates see only the lines they're assigned to. A lawn company and a paving company can share one account, one bill, and one team, while the paving crew only ever sees paving calls. Admins handle billing, lines, 911, texting registration, and business verification; members answer the phones.

Keep the number customers already know

Start with a new local number picked by area code, or move the one you already advertise. Porting is free on every plan and usually takes 3 to 7 business days. Until it finishes, you answer on a temporary number, so nothing stops ringing.

Getting started

  1. Create a login and pick a plan. Checkout saves a card for the 7-day free trial, and nothing is charged until it ends.
  2. Confirm your business and its 911 address, and get a local number on the spot. Bringing your own number? You answer on a temporary one while it moves over, for free.
  3. Choose where calls ring, write what callers hear, invite your team, and register for texting. Then answer in the browser, the iPhone and Android apps, or a desk phone. How it works has the details.

Included on every plan

Starter is $17, Business is $29, Scale is $42 per user a month, or less billed yearly. The plan includes a business number for each user and unlimited calling and texting in the US and Canada. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and moving your current number over is free.

Questions

Can several people answer the same business number?

Yes. Everyone assigned to a line can answer it, and everything set to ring for that line rings at once. The first person to pick up takes the call.

Do I pay for everyone who answers?

Plans are priced per user, and each user includes a line and unlimited calling and texting; the team can share one number. Every plan allows unlimited users.

Will customers see my personal cell number?

No. Calls and texts you make from Onyx Phone show the line's business number.
