Carrier not listed? The checklist below works for any carrier, and their support team can give you the account number and PIN.
What every carrier asks for
- The account number from your current carrier, which is often not your phone number.
- A transfer or port-out PIN, if the carrier uses one. Most expire in 4 to 7 days, so get it right before you start.
- The account holder's name and the service address exactly as your carrier has them. Copy them from a bill.
- A recent bill, as a PDF or a photo, from the last 30 days.
- An active account. Don't cancel your old service until the move is done, or the number can be lost.
How the move works
- Start your free trial. You get a temporary local number right away, so you can make and take calls today.
- Forward your current number to the temporary one if you like (most landlines: dial *72 and the number), so customers reach you here during the move.
- In Onyx Phone, open Lines, then Begin a port, enter the details above, and attach the bill. Moving a number is free on every plan.
- Sign the letter of authorization we email you. Nothing starts until it's signed.
- The carriers confirm a date, usually 3 to 7 business days after you sign. On port day your number replaces the temporary one, and calls you place show it.
- The temporary number keeps ringing your line for 30 more days, so anyone you gave it to still gets through, then it's released.
Texting registration doesn't come with the number. US carriers approve each business that texts, so register in Onyx Phone when you start the move; approval usually takes one to two weeks, and calling works meanwhile.
Moving a cell number? Prepare the phone first
- iPhone: turn the number off in Settings, Messages, Send & Receive, and in Settings, FaceTime, so texts from other iPhones don't keep going to iMessage.
- Android: turn off RCS chats in your messaging app (Google Messages: Messages settings, RCS chats) before the number moves. It can't be done afterward.
- Group chats don't carry over: start new ones once the number is on Onyx Phone.
Why a move gets turned down
- The account number, name, or address doesn't match what the carrier has. Copy them from a recent bill.
- The PIN expired or was replaced. Get a new one and send the request again.
- The account has a balance due, is suspended, or has a number lock turned on.
- The old service was canceled before the move finished.
If it happens, Onyx Phone tells you what the carrier said and lets you fix it and send it again.
