Onyx Phone vs Quo (formerly OpenPhone)

Quo, which used to be called OpenPhone, and Onyx Phone are built the same way: per-user plans that include a business number for each user, unlimited calling and texting in the US and Canada, and plans named Starter, Business, and Scale. Onyx Phone costs less on every tier. Quo has been around longer and does a few things Onyx Phone does not yet. This page lays out both, so you can pick with the facts.

What a team of five pays each month

Five people on Onyx Phone Starter cost $85 a month, billed monthly, with a number included for each person. Quo Starter is $95 a month, billed monthly for the same five people. That is $10 more each month, about $120 a year.

The tiers line up one to one. Starter to Starter, Business to Business, Scale to Scale, and the Onyx Phone price is lower at each step, monthly or yearly. Both include a number for each user and charge $5 a month for each extra number, and both pass US carriers' texting registration fees on at cost. The savings page works out the difference for teams of one, five, and fifteen.

Where Quo is stronger

  • Sona, Quo's AI agent, can answer calls for you. Onyx Phone does not answer calls with AI; it greets callers, screens robocalls, and takes voicemail.
  • Quo connects to HubSpot and Salesforce directly. Onyx Phone reaches them through Zapier.
  • Quo publishes a SOC 2 Type II report and offers HIPAA support. Onyx Phone has neither yet; the security page says what it does today.
  • Quo has desktop apps for Mac and Windows. Onyx Phone runs in the browser.

Where Onyx Phone is stronger

  • A lower price on every tier: $17, $29, and $42 per user a month.
  • No user cap on Starter. Quo's Starter stops at 10 users, so an 11th person moves a whole Quo team to Business.
  • Rings the browser, the iPhone and Android apps, and desk phones at once. Yealink and Grandstream phones set themselves up from one web address.
  • A press-1 robocall screen, so spam calls never ring anyone's phone.
  • Greetings in twelve voices, eleven of them natural AI voices, and your own hold music.
  • Missed-call text-back on every plan.
  • A monthly overage cap you set, so a busy month cannot surprise you.
