How to move your number from Verizon
Cell and business numbers from Verizon. You need your account number and a Number Transfer PIN from My Verizon.
What you'll need from Verizon
- Account number
- In My Verizon under your account settings, and at the top of your bill. Personal accounts are usually 10 to 14 digits, business accounts 15 to 20, and government and enterprise accounts 18 to 22.
- PIN
- A 6-digit Number Transfer PIN, valid for 7 days. A personal account uses one PIN for all its lines; a business account needs a PIN for each line.
- Name and address
- Exactly as Verizon has them on your account. Copy them from a recent bill.
- A recent bill
- A PDF or a photo from the last 30 days.
Get your PIN
- In the My Verizon app or website, open your profile settings, choose Number Transfer PIN, then Generate PIN.
- Or dial #PORT from the Verizon phone, and Verizon texts you a link to create it.
- Business accounts: the Primary Contact or an Administrator creates a PIN for each line in My Business.
Good to know
- Turn off Number Lock first, or you can't create a PIN.
- Only the Account Owner or an Account Manager can create the PIN.
- Once you've given us the PIN, don't create another one: a new PIN can stop the move.
- Keep your Verizon service until the move is done, or the number can be lost.
Before the number leaves your phone
- iPhone: turn the number off in Settings, Messages, Send & Receive, and in Settings, FaceTime, so texts from other iPhones don't keep going to iMessage.
- Android: turn off RCS chats in your messaging app (Google Messages: Messages settings, RCS chats) before the number moves. It can't be done afterward.
- Group chats don't carry over: start new ones once the number is on Onyx Phone.
Then move it to Onyx Phone
- Start your free trial. You get a temporary local number right away, so you can make and take calls today.
- Forward your current number to the temporary one if you like (most landlines: dial *72 and the number), so customers reach you here during the move.
- In Onyx Phone, open Lines, then Begin a port, enter the details above, and attach the bill. Moving a number is free on every plan.
- Sign the letter of authorization we email you. Nothing starts until it's signed.
- The carriers confirm a date, usually 3 to 7 business days after you sign. On port day your number replaces the temporary one, and calls you place show it.
- The temporary number keeps ringing your line for 30 more days, so anyone you gave it to still gets through, then it's released.
Texting registration doesn't come with the number. US carriers approve each business that texts, so register in Onyx Phone when you start the move; approval usually takes one to two weeks, and calling works meanwhile.

Questions about moving from Verizon
How long does it take to move a number from Verizon?
Usually 3 to 7 business days after you sign the letter of authorization. Verizon and Onyx Phone's carrier confirm the date, and you get an email at each step.
Will my phone stop working while the number moves?
No. Keep your Verizon service until the move is done. You answer on a temporary Onyx Phone number in the meantime, and you can forward your current number to it so customers reach you either way.
Does moving my number cost anything?
Moving it to Onyx Phone is free on every plan.
Can I text from the number as soon as it moves?
Texting registration doesn't come with the number. US carriers approve each business that texts, so register in Onyx Phone when you start the move; approval usually takes one to two weeks, and calling works meanwhile.
What if Verizon turns the move down?
Onyx Phone shows what the carrier said, and you can fix the details and send it again. The usual reasons: the account number, name, or address doesn't match what the carrier has. Copy them from a recent bill; the PIN expired or was replaced. Get a new one and send the request again.
Can I move a toll-free number?
Not from the app yet. Guides cover US local and mobile numbers. For a toll-free number, tell us on the contact form and we'll arrange it.
