Phone app / iPhone setup
Set up the Onyx Phone app on iPhone
The iPhone settings for Onyx Phone: the microphone, full-screen incoming calls, mobile data, and Focus. Business calls ring like a regular iPhone call, even when the phone is locked.
Business calls ring with the iPhone's own call screen, so they work like any other call, even when the app is closed or the phone is locked. The iPhone asks for the microphone the first time you call; the rest are settings worth checking once.
1. Microphone
Without it the other person can't hear you.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Onyx Phone (on iOS 17 and earlier, scroll down to Onyx Phone in Settings).
- Turn on Microphone.
2. Full-screen incoming calls
While you're using the iPhone, calls show as a banner at the top unless this is set. The setting covers every calling app, Onyx Phone included.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Phone (on iOS 17 and earlier, Settings, then Phone).
- Tap Incoming Calls and choose Full Screen.
3. Mobile data
Lets calls ring and connect away from Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data), scroll to Onyx Phone, and turn it on.
4. Focus and silent mode
A Focus, such as Do Not Disturb or Work, silences business calls like any other, and the ring/silent switch or Action button mutes the ring.
- Open Settings, then Focus, choose the Focus you use, then Apps, and add Onyx Phone.
- Make sure the phone isn't on silent if you want to hear it ring.
Check that it works
Lock the iPhone and have someone call your business number. It should ring with the full call screen. Then call again while you're using another app.
Good to know
- Your own alert hours, set in the app, keep the phone quiet when you're off. Calls still ring the browser and anyone else on the line.
- If calls ring on mobile data but not on one Wi-Fi network, that network is closing the phone's push connection when it's quiet. Ask whoever runs it to let quiet connections stay open for at least 15 minutes and to allow outgoing port 5223, which Apple uses for push.
