Phone app / Android setup
Set up the Onyx Phone app on Android
The Android settings that make business calls ring full screen, even when the phone is locked or asleep: microphone, notifications, full-screen notifications, appear on top, and battery.
Android asks for most of these when you first open the app. If you tapped Don't allow, or calls show only as a banner or stop ringing after the phone sits for a while, check each setting below. Menu names vary a little between phone makers: these use Samsung's and Google Pixel's.
Steps for your phone's battery settings: Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO.
1. Microphone
Without it the app can't answer or place calls: the other person can't hear you.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Onyx Phone, then Permissions.
- Tap Microphone and choose Allow only while using the app.
2. Notifications
Incoming calls, texts, and voicemails arrive as notifications. With them off, calls don't ring.
- In Settings, open Apps, then Onyx Phone, then Notifications.
- Turn on Allow notifications, and leave Incoming calls on with sound.
3. Full-screen notifications
Lets a call fill the screen while the phone is locked or asleep, like a regular call. Android 14 and later ask for this separately.
- In the app's Calls tab, tap Allow on Show incoming calls full screen.
- Or in Settings, open Apps, then Onyx Phone, and turn on Full screen notifications (Pixel: Special app access, then Full screen intents).
4. Appear on top
Lets a call fill the screen while you're using the phone, too. Without it, a call shows as a banner at the top of the screen; tap the banner or Full screen to open the call screen.
- In the app's Calls tab, tap Allow on Show incoming calls full screen.
- Or in Settings, open Apps, then Onyx Phone, and turn on Appear on top (Pixel: Display over other apps).
5. Battery
Android's battery saving can stop the app from waking up for a call after the phone sits idle, often overnight.
- In Settings, open Apps, then Onyx Phone, then Battery, and choose Unrestricted.
- On Samsung, also open Settings, then Battery, then Background usage limits, and make sure Onyx Phone isn't under Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps.
6. Nearby devices
Lets calls use a Bluetooth headset or your car.
- In Settings, open Apps, then Onyx Phone, then Permissions, and allow Nearby devices.
Check that it works
Lock the phone and have someone call your business number. It should wake the screen and ring full screen. Then call again while you're using another app: the call should fill the screen too.
Good to know
- Do Not Disturb silences business calls like any other. To let them through, add Onyx Phone to the apps allowed in Do Not Disturb.
- Your own alert hours, set in the app, keep the phone quiet when you're off. Calls still ring the browser and anyone else on the line.
- Calls work over Wi-Fi or mobile data. On a weak connection, the other person may sound choppy.
- If calls ring on mobile data but not on one Wi-Fi network, that network is closing the phone's push connection when it's quiet. Set the app's battery use to Unrestricted, and ask whoever runs the network to let quiet connections stay open for at least 15 minutes and to allow outgoing port 5228, which Google uses for push.
